The 2-degree scenario; changing the reference

GreenPrices Weekly, 17 July 2007 – Everyone seems to agree that global warning should not exceed 2 degrees Celsius. But what is actually needed to achieve this goal by 2050 and are we on the right track? Researchers from the German Aerospace Centre (DLR), Ecofys, Greenpeace and EREC show in the Energy Policy journal how it can be done. They recommend their work should be adopted as a future benchmark in stead of the Business-as-Usual scenario.

Europe needs one green power market. Not 27

GreenPrices Weekly, 20 April 2007 – Member States must increase the share of renewable power they use to more than 30% by 2020. Most can only do so by importing, so a green power market is desperately needed, says the European Commission. But how such a market should function, no one knows. Not even the Union of the Electricity Industry, Eurelectric, who made an inventory of the obstacles ahead at a conference in Brussels this week.

“Billions at risk” from climate change

GreenPrices Weekly, 6 April 2007 – For the first time, the global scientific community confirmed that climate change is happening, both on a global and on a regional level. “Even if we agree on mitigation of climate change, we have to adapt to address impacts of warming already happening,” said Martin Parry, co-chair of the second Working Group contributing to this year’s assessment of climate change by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). “Billions of people are at risk”.

An inquiry into military thinking on courage, cowardice, loyalty and group cohesion leads to an interesting paradox: in modern conflicts as peacekeeping and anti-terrorism, traditional military hierarchy necessarily gives way to individual judgement and responsability. Philosopher Marcel Becker observes that this will always lead to conflicts. We filmed at the training of the next Dutch batlallion heading for Iraq to find out how peacegrown men are prepared for war. Is that actually possible? Are they brave enough and are they ready to sacrifice themselves for the higher goal, whatever that might be? Continued…

The Finnish Model

Het Finse Model (The Finnish Model)
VPRO Noorderlicht / 53 min / 14-09-2003

Early this year, the Netherlands dropped from the 8th place in Michael Porter’s Global Competitiveness Report (World Economic Forum) to the 15th place. Until then it was assumed a natural fact that the Netherlands belonged to the topten of innovative economies, but the index drop meant something was seriously wrong with the acclaimed Dutch ‘knowledge economy’. As a contrast, Finland is on top of the list with cellphone manufacturer Nokia as the obvious flagship. Hence, ‘The Finnish Model’ is often quoted as a solution for the Netherlands. But how does this model work, which are the ideas behind it and what exactly can the Netherlands learn from it? Continued…
