COMMENTAAR

DR.JOHN R. HALE
ARCHEOLOOG, UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE
In the first century BC, a man from Sicily called Diodorus wrote an Encyclopedia of world history. He included a story of how the Oracle at Delphi was found. He said that there was a sheperd on the slopes of mount Parnassos. One day he noticed that his goats were bleeting in strange way when they came near a cleft in the ground. So he went over and stuck his head above the cleft. He started speaking prophecies and his fellow herdsmen heard him, came over and realised this was something very special and when some of his prophecies came true the spot acquired a great deal of fame as an oracle.

The first settlements of Delphi are around 1400 BC, by the 8th century Homer is talking about Delphic Oracles and prophecies and how rich it is. So for hundreds of years it was a very active and very important site and then some time after the the fourth century or in the fourth century, it just seems to shut down…

PROF JELLE ZEILINGA DE BOER
GEOLOOG, WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY

DR JOHN. R.HALE
Here was a tiny village, no means of support on it¹s own, not rich in soil or vines or natural resources and yet they became one of the richest sites in the ancient world. The whole of the Greek world seems to come together at this point in Delphi.

PROF.

COMMENTAAR

DR JOHN R. HALE
If you had been a Greek consulting the Delphic Oracle, 2000 years ago or more, you would have climbed the pilgrims way along the side of the hill in the early morning at the seventh day of the month, the day sacred to Apollo. And in front of the temple there would have been a crowd of people gathered under the big Doric columns and the priest would be assigning people their places in a cue waiting to consult the oracle. A goat wa sacrificed, you can still see the corrogations in the ramp up to the temple were the sacrificial animals were led so they have a secure footing and if the omens would be favourable, then the first people were allowed in. Inside was the front area in the temple with a hearth in the middle with a fire that never went out and priestesses to guard it.
You passed through that room, came down a corridor and into the place where below the floor level the Pythia, the Oracle had gone down to take her seat on a tripod and that¹s were I¹m sitting now. In the Adython of the temple.
You¹d come in, the priest would call you forward and you would ask your question. And it could be anything. You might be a farmer asking about your son, or you might be a merchant asking about a ship or a city asking about forming a new colony or a king asking about a war. All of these things were subjects were the Oracle would prophecie about. And after you had put your question, she would speak.

METEN AAN ROTS BIJ BRON

PROF.

KAART ANIMATIE

DR JOHN R. HALE
Every one who studies Greece hears that story. The guides still tell that story today but when I got to the university when I was at Yale, I learned that: Oh, that¹s all false. French archelogists have dug at Delphi for hundred years, they found nothing under the temple in the form of a crack in the earth and geologists have studied Delphi and they have discovered conclusively that there are no rocks at Delphi among those limestones and schichts (?) that could produce those vapour. So it¹s yet another fairy tale of the Greeks. It¹s a myth, it¹s a lie, it¹s a fabrication.

TOERISTEN

DR JOHN R. HALE
So I was very surprised about six years ago when I met Jelle de Boer in Portugal. I was there to do archeological work and he was there to geological work. We met by chance on a hilltop and we were talking about sites were we had done previous work and we both mentioned Greece.

PROF.

DR JOHN R. HALE
I said: ³ Jelle, I¹m not aware that¹s really true. I think those faults are a myth and it¹s been shown by the archeologists that there isn¹t any substance to that story.²

PROF.

DR JOHN R. HALE
I¹m happy to say that one thing lead to another and we came over.

LOPEN MET VLAGGETJES

PROF.

VLAGGETJE PLAATSEN

DR JOHN R. HALE
The ancient Greeks said that there was an Oracle at Delphi because the earth had an opening there and a priestess sitting over that opening breathing the pneuma, the gasses that came out could prophecy. In the 20th century that ancient Greek tradition has been rejected. At it¹s been the purpose of the research project between Jelle de Boer and myself to prove, through modern geology and studying the ancient texts, that the ancient Greeks were right.

VLAGGETJES PLAATSEN

PROF.
Waar John zit, vlak achter hem, daar was de zogenaamde Kassotis-well.

DR JOHN R. HALE
There are many indications of earthquakes in the old literary sources about Delphi. It¹s interesting that when you enter the temple of Apollo, there was an alter to another god here at Delphi and that was Poseidon. He was the god of earthquakes as well as better known as god of the sea. So he was worshipped here because there were so many earthquakes here and it was so unstable. In three seperate occasions there were invaders who came to Delphi to pilage or lute the sanctuary. Persians came in 480 BC, Phoecians came under two generals in 352, 353 BC, a hundred years later, Gauls, Celts came down out of Europe. And each time, according to the historians, there were falls of rock, earthquakes and the invaders were frightened away. Even some of them as they were digging up for treasures from the sanctuary. So the god.. The ancienst believed that the god was protecting his own treasures. And we¹re sitting in the area of Athena Pronea, the entrance way to Delphi, the lower temple. And here there are huge rockfalls, some of them even from the 20th century, that have knocked down columns, tore up the buildings and show us that a lot of the destructions was not by humans but by nature itself through these avalanches touched off by earthquakes.

COMMENTAAR

DR JOHN R. HALE
There are a number of big earthquakes that seem to have affected Delphi. It is on a very unstable geological zone. And the most important one seems to have been in 373 BC.
It¹s interesting that up until that time Delphi has continued to be an important political oracle and after that time, it stops. And no one comments on this.
It was certainly still a very rich site and in the 350¹s and in the third century people were still coming here and trying to take the treasures away but it ceased to have a political importance as it had during the colonizing period, during the Persian war period, during the Pelopenesian war period, and maybe that earthquake was the moment that things kind of closed up and the gasses, as Plutarch says, stopped finding their outlet in the temple and found their outlet somewhere else.

COMMENTAAR

DR JOHN R. HALE
It bothered Plutarch that in his day, this didn¹t happen anymore. There weren¹t steady flows of vapours, the spring did not appear in the temple AND he wrote an essay called ŒDe defectu oraculorum¹, on the failing of the Oracles. In his time she didn¹t even speak in poetry, she just said her answers straight out. So he felt the powers had weakened and so her responses had weakened. He turned to the scientific school of the Greeks which had been founded after the time of Alexander the Great to try to understand through geology what had happened. He knew Delphi was in an earthquake zone and so it was his belief that earthquakes working deep in the earth had closed the faults. And so the gases had to find new routes to come to the surface and it was no longer here in the temple and that was Plutarch¹s own explanation.
So it¹s interesting to see a man who¹s been appointed high priest and is stage managing one of the most prominent religious acts in the ancient world seeking answers for his difficulty in the conclusions of scientists.

PROF. JELLE DE BOER
When the Kassotis spring down here was closed up, the waters had to find another way out and so they rose a little higher up and sort of travelled over this wall and as the temperature of the water decreased the traventine layer by layer was deposited.
But we also hope of course to find some traces of the hydrocarbon materials in it, that would be beautifull.

COMMENTAAR

IN BAD

DR. JOHN R. HALE
I¹m not sure what Jelle¹s opinion is on this but I believe that if there was enough in the beginning, a strong enough flow to cause an alteration of the consciousness, the spot would have acquired a reputation that would then have been self perpetuating. And those who were in the right place and on the tripod would have been expected to be put into a trance and the least litlle bit of vapour from that cleft would have been enough to do it. But we¹re speculating, I don¹t know.

PROF. JELLE DE BOER
It makes the most sense though. This model makes the most sense. Originally at the intial stages having enough gas to cause intoxication and then gradually that decreases over time. By that time the temple has been established, the whole hierarchy has been established, and you have to continue, even if you don¹t want to. And so I agree with John that that is the most obvious. But that initially there was enough gas to cause intoxication appears obvious from the readings.

DR JOHN R. HALE
To be able to prove that the cult of Apollo at Delphi and the oracle here had a geological basis is something that every Greek of the ancient world would take for granted but that all scholars of the 20th century would be very surprised to hear.
